Farmers to Fight Malnutrition

We had a cold winter in Yakawlang this year, and even though it is springtime, the trees haven't budded, yet.  Presently, we have distributed more than 16,000 poplar cuttings! As we give the cuttings to the local farmers, we also teach them how to plant hybrid poplars. So far, 20 farmers have been trained this year.

IDPs critically low on food provision

Our TCD partners in Western Myanmar are in a desperate situation.  The on-going conflict between the Arakan Army and Burmese Military has escalated in recent weeks, with an expected peak in fighting in Paletwa Township to occur this week.  Thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have flooded Paletwa town and local food stocks have been depleted, tripling the price of rice in local markets.

Kitchen Gardens Take Off

During the month of February, no major crops were cultivated in Jatapara Village. Farming here is generally focused on rice cultivation, which is done in the month of July. In the months of October and November, vegetables like potatoes, radishes and mustard are cultivated.

Tuan is a young leader of Nissi Nguon Phuoc Rescue Centre system where he presently leads a system which includes three centres serving the community in fields such as drug rescue, alcohol rescue and help, pregnancy, as well as rehabilitation.

Water – People are drinking water from the hand pumps. The weather has been so cold that people are boiling the water before drinking.

 

Food – Villagers had stopped eating healthy food regularly but have now begun using their kitchen gardens again.
