Better Health for Sunita

Ɖorgovska mahala, Serbia

Our focus this month has been health. Health is a big issue for these Roma-gypsies and it is very important. Most have a long history of ill health and of not taking care of themselves. From the five Transformational Community Development (TCD) focuses of Water, Food, Health, Income Generation, and Education, health continues to be a major issue for them.

Ana’s New Attitude

Đorgovska mahala Village, Serbia

“My name is Ana, and I’m twelve years old. I’m the daughter of Alise and Sasa. I live in Đorgovska mahala Village with my parents and grandparents. I’m part of the Transformational Community Development (TCD) group, along with my mom and grandma, also. My grandfather and father are musicians, and that’s how they support all of us.

Learning Self-Worth Improves Life

Jasha and her husband Zoran are part of our Transformational Community Development (TCD) group. Now she's a regular to our gatherings. Thanks to TCD, she saw the changed life of her husband and she wants to learn and change her previous habits.

Their marriage relationship is better, and Jasha goes for regular medical examinations. Although she has a rare physical defect, thanks to TCD she is learning to see herself as a worthy person and how to be filled with love for her neighbors, in a harmony and unity.

A Family Learns to Thrive

Jelena lives in a Đorgovska mahala with her husband and three children (two boys and a girl). Her husband is a musician and supports the family as such. Life has been very hard for them. Now, Jelena is part of our Transformational Community Development (TCD) group. Her behavior towards her husband and children has improved and there is more peace in the family. Jelena has also learned how to care and maintain good health from the TCD.

Tangible Transformations

Many villagers have returned from being away for seasonal work and the school year has started. Our regular visits were limited due to agricultural work. The women that were working in our town were regular to our gatherings. Improvement can be seen in their lives, thanks to our Transformational Community Development (TCD) program.

The last three months, we had bank training. The women in the mahala started saving money from their income, so that they could start their businesses. Every month, they are putting money aside.

Giving Tuesday is Today!

The day we've been waiting for has finally arrived! Giving Tuesday is the perfect opportunity to become a more committed supporter of GHNI. As a reminder, there are 3 easy ways you can join in the movement today and help villagers end their extreme poverty:

1. Give

Every gift makes a big impact! For example, did you know just $10 can provide gardening equipment for a family to grow their own food? Or that just $25 can provide a pair of chickens?

Young Man Takes Responsibility

Last month, villagers in Đjorgovska mahala were busy with agricultural work, harvesting plums. Now a large number of them are absent because they went to harvest grapes. Also, a number went to work for two months in Slovakia. Even with smaller numbers, we held regular meetings and made personal visits to families in the mahala.

Though they came into meetings sad from work, they were excited to hear our Transformational Community Development (TCD) lessons. Special attention was drawn to family topics on responsibilities in marriage and the upbringing of children.
