Building Dams to Water Crops

Dhoker Jhara Village, India

This month we are excited as we see the fruit of our labor. Two months ago, some villagers and I planted a wheat paddy. Now it’s grown big and is ready to become a model of second cropping. Because of the lack of water, people didn’t want to risk their capital on second cropping. However, we successfully showed them how they can get enough water from the nearby seasonal river to cultivate their farms. We blocked the river with mud and stones to make a small dam and are hoping that next time more villagers will get involved with us for second cropping. It’s very hard to convince people about something they are not used to. Getting them to do second cropping has always been a great challenge for us.
