Children’s Day Festivities

*Due to the delay in receiving reports from the field, this report is about activity in the winter.
December happens to be a special month for the children in Sri Lanka. They always anticipate receiving gifts, as giving and receiving gifts for Christmas is an age-old tradition. No matter what region or caste one belongs to, children always look forward to gifts that commemorate the birth of Christ, which is Christmas.
Each year, as we gladly anticipate, the children’s eyes were on what we were bringing out of the tree wheeler as we entered the tutoring class. When they saw the boxes, they were so excited and wanting to know what their gifts would be. The children performed by singing English songs that were taught to them by their teacher. It was nice to see smiling faces on this day to enjoy.
The children were served cakes, sweets, and ice cream. It was a joy to see them really enjoy the ice cream. Gifts were given to the children, and each gift contained books, a pencil, a pen, and a ruler. The children in higher classes were also given instrument boxes. The children thanked GHNI for the English and math tutoring classes and thanked our donors for giving them gifts that they appreciated very much.
