Clean Pumps, Hot Potatoes

Jatapara Village, India

This past December, we were busy with our harvesting work. Villagers were also busy harvesting crops. We encouraged a few people to try out new harvesting techniques. A few people say using the machine is too expensive because it needs to be fuelled up. As a result, many of them continued with the old technique using the leg. We somehow managed to encourage them about the benefit of using a pump machine. A villager named Habil is very happy with this technique. A nearby village called Chandopani also adopted this technique and everyone there is satisfied.

This month four families started potato farming. As the price of potatoes continues to climb, people are becoming more aware of potato farming.

Jatapara's hand pumps were lacking a nearby soak pit, which is an ordinary, covered chamber that allows water to slowly soak into the ground. It is made of stone, brick, or concentrated blocks and is filled with bricks, stones, or sometimes a concrete slab. They allow septic water to be treated naturally. We made a soak pit near the five hand pumps. Now the hand pump area is cleaner and people are also more healthy.

Thank you!
