Community Transformation Happens Through GHNI

RT Village*, Nepal

This season has been difficult due to the coronavirus, yet we are in the field as much as possible to save lives. We are working hard and encouraging people through the Transformational Community Development (TCD) movement.

Almost all the villagers are receiving good teaching and encouragement for their lives and their transformation through our TCD classes, even despite COVID-19. In small groups, house visits, and one-on-one meetings, I teach and encourage them to care for their health and education, and to keep their house clean, along with personal items they use.

I have taught people how to maintain healthy lives and have shared with my community how to keep their families safe in their homes from various disasters, including house fires and water damage. I have shared lessons with villagers during this rainy season about landslides and flooding, warning them to be careful of these natural disasters, stressing the importance of parents taking good care of their children and not letting them go to the riverside. Last year, three children fell in the river and died. When I teach the villagers these things, they become careful about these matters.

Villagers are also being taught how to earn more income. I have taught people how to generate income in various ways. Now, many families are involved in Income Generation! I hold meetings with the TCD committee and discuss our activities, as well as their respective roles and responsibilities in the TCD movement. Committee members also are actively involved in TCD.

I travel door to door to monitor progress and see how they are doing, teaching people to stay safe and healthy, eat good food, and drink pure water. I also cover personal hygiene as well as how to strengthen their immunity to face all kinds of diseases.

Lal**, who is running a small shop, sells chattapate (a kind of Nepali snack). He is a successful person in this village. He attends our TCD class, and after he learnt lessons about Income Generation, he started his shop. Before this, he used to work collecting sand and stone to sell, which was very hard work that did not pay well. Now his shop has become a good income source. He is earning about 1,000 NPR per day. He says that he learnt it through TCD. He is a successful man now and can cover family needs from his business. Lal is a good model for the community.

TCD Update

  • Water - Teaching people about safe water for drinking, washing, cooking, and cleaning has been very effective.
  • Food - People have been growing food from their kitchen gardens.
  • Income Generation - Some people have started a micro shop, animal husbandry, and a chicken farm for Income Generation, which has been a model for other families.
  • Education - We taught lessons about coronavirus to the villagers.
  • Wellness - We taught about cleanliness, using the toilet, and health care in general.

Thank you!
