Despite Floods, Students Attend Class

WR Village*, Sri Lanka

It was raining so heavily and very difficult to drive! Two feet of water flooded the roads. We were wondering whether the children would be able to come to the tutoring class. On heavy rainy days, it is impossible to teach in the shelter, as the strong winds blow rain into it.

Happily, our landlords have granted permission for the class to be in the house. Students were enthusiastic as they came for the study to learn and do their work!

The children’s request was to provide them with facemasks and hand sanitiser. At present, we do not have funds to buy these items, yet they are necessary. We hope that a donor will help us. Total cost is approximately..

TCD Update

  • Water- Pure drinking water is available in the village except for about six homes. Now, during the rainy season, there is plenty of clean water for drinking and bathing.

  • Food - Many families enjoy at least two meals a day. We saw more vegetables grown during the COVID-19 period as the children started to grow them! Soon we will be teaching how to grow vegetables in home garden spaces through Transformational Community Development (TCD) lessons.

  • Income Generation - We made them aware of microloans and their benefits. The villagers are excited and prepared to start income generation projects. We are looking for donors to fund the project.

  • Education - The number of children has increased to 50! The Education Committee is doing a good job going from home to home informing the parents about the importance of education.

  • Wellness - Wellness in the village needs improvement. Through TCD teachings, we will teach the villages to improve wellness in their homes. COVID-19 was a threat to the village. We had to obey rules and restrictions by the government. This presented an opportunity to teach the children about the virus and what should be done daily to avoid catching it. Immediate measures are taken for individuals suffering with a cough or fever to stop the spread of the disease.

Thank you!
