Determined to Learn and Excel

Isiolo Empowerment Centre, Kenya

“I was accepted into the GHNI sewing class when I was about to give up on my life,” Jane said. “I can now say I will have a happy life because of what I experienced in my sewing class. I want to thank my teacher Mr. Stephen. Even though I’m not good at reading and writing, he still accepted me. Thank you for teaching me. My dream is to have a dressmaking shop and a canteen for my future work.”

Jane grew up not knowing who her parents were. She was reared by her aunt and uncle, but Jane experienced a very rough childhood. She currently lives by herself in a small rented house in a community of Meru who live in Gedebeni near the Isiolo Airport area.

Due to the challenges of life, Jane involves herself in commercial sex work and ended up getting two children, whom she now raises all by herself. Despite her arduous past, Jane is determined to overcome life’s difficulties. We saw her determination during our sewing trainings. Because Jane lacks education (she only reached grade 1 in school), she had a hard time in reading and writing, as well as understanding English and some maths formulas in our pattern-making class. She was dependent on her teachers helping her on her pattern-making projects.

One time during class, the teacher made a comment to Jane that he meant as a joke, but for her it wasn’t. She was hurt and she cried. Later, she told the teacher she was hurt, not because of what he said, but because she pitied herself and her lack of understanding.

Fortunately, Jane approached her lack of education as a challenge and decided it would not hinder her learning how to sew. She promised herself she would learn and excel.

Thank you!
