Building Vision to Overcome Stumbling Blocks

In the month of May, we placed a vision into the minds of villagers to transform themselves and their community. Their traditional mind-set is to want results, instantly. For example, if they have to earn money, they will prefer doing work which can gain them instant income. This is one reason why they cannot -- or don’t -- want to do business. This is a stumbling block in their way of development.

Two Goats toward a Dream

Fulmuni, a housewife, lives in Dhoker Jhara Village with her nuclear family. Her husband is a laborer who works hard to earn his living. They have a beautiful daughter who studies in school. Fulmuni is a hard-working lady, who manages to do all the household work and take care of her husband and daughter as well.

In this quarter, we distributed goats among villagers to help them become self-sustaining for the long term. We loaned two to three goats to every individual who was interested in taking them. They will take care of the goats for the next one to two years and can start a chain of animal husbandry through the animals’ offspring.

Planted Visions Bloom

It’s a remarkable sign of transformation when we see something happening by itself, especially after we have been trying to do this for a long time. Last month was quite surprising for me as I saw two villagers conducting business, which is non-traditional for our community.

Motivated to Keep Planting

This month, it was encouraging that we didn’t have to tell the villagers to plant their next crop, just after harvesting rice. They did it by themselves. The village committee had arranged a meeting and decided to do a second crop. However, because of an insufficient water source, they could not do it to a large extent, but only in places where they could drag the water. They mainly grew mustard plants and some seasonal vegetables.

For a long time, I have been longing to see all of my villagers working together as a team, making decisions together, and doing projects together. Up till now, neighbors have functioned apart and even created obstacles for other villagers.
