Families Prepare Plots to Farm Food

Elala Village, Ethiopia

Elala Village has practised Transformational Community Development (TCD) for the last three years. Several villagers using different types of irrigation can easily produce various vegetables to sell as well as for food for their families.

These days, it has been globally challenging because of COVID-19. The Ethiopian government announced that every citizen should grow different vegetables and grains, even on small plots of land, to stave off food shortages due to the pandemic. It has been forecasted that the total production of grains and vegetables will decline. In an effort to help with the situation, the government has provided special seeds for the TCD programme in Elala and Tuti villages. Also, our TCD Agriculture Committee has prepared the farms to be ready for seedlings.

Fortunately, from the previous harvest, they have been making very good money. For example, one of the group members, Kemale and his family, made 5,670 birr. Theirs is a family of five. Each day they can cover their own consumption from the farm, and the above income comes from the surplus!
