Farmers to Fight Malnutrition

*Valley of Ali, Afghanistan

We had a cold winter in Yakawlang this year, and even though it is springtime, the trees haven't budded, yet.  Presently, we have distributed more than 16,000 poplar cuttings! As we give the cuttings to the local farmers, we also teach them how to plant hybrid poplars. So far, 20 farmers have been trained this year.

Besides the trees, we also have a small plot to plant different kinds of vegetables and fruits. Two years ago, we planted some strawberries. This year we separated them to propagate. We now have some strawberry plants ready to give to farmers. Strawberries produce fruit very quickly in comparison to other local fruits, and they are very delicious!

We will grow about 10 different vegetables and train more farmers in remote villages to promote a vegetable growing culture. Thus, we will reduce malnutrition this year.

TCD Update

Food - So many people in Yakawlang still face malnutrition problems. Our kitchen garden helps people to learn how to make a small greenhouse and plant different classic vegetables.

Income Generation - Hybrid poplars grow faster in comparison to local trees. In recent years, villagers are interested in planting poplars to increase their incomes.

Thank you!
