Meet Kelvin, a 16-year-old boy who was born and brought up in Gem Village. Kelvin was born crippled and had a rough time growing up as a child. He spent most of his time indoors and hidden, because culturally it was kind of taboo and shameful to have a crippled child.

“Unity is strength.” So testifies the newly formed “Badilika” young adults’ group in Gem Village. The Badilika group has really enjoyed learning how to earn an income, and is also glad they are escaping all the idle time that contributed a lot to unwanted pregnancies and drug abuse.


A Safe Place to Belong

Gem is a new village GHNI works in after discovering the destitute children who have no parents. The women who volunteer to help them shared with us how they struggle with them, day in and day out. To make matters worse, these children have no place to call home.


Preventing Infections with Proper Hygiene

Growing up with a challenged immunity status is not an easy thing. Proper hygiene boosts your chances of staying healthy, but the challenge comes when there is no access to clean water to maintain cleanliness. At Victor’s homestead in Gem Village, we have some children who were born HIV positive, and due to poverty and poor housing, many of these children suffer tuberculosis and are infested by jiggers. They do not have sufficient and proper food, leading to malnourishment.

Widows Benefit From Micro Loans

Gem is the fifth village to be adopted by GHNI-Kenya in order to improve the lives of widows and orphans. They number more than 200 due to the high HIV and AIDS infection rate. It was just beginning in early 2016 as we adopted this village. Within seven months, a lot has already been achieved.
