Grocer Wanted

Kharibari Village, India

We have been setting up a grocery shop in the village for a long time, because Kharibari Village has no grocery shop and villagers had to go one kilometre away to buy necessary commodities. In this regard, I’ve met with five villagers so far, two ladies and three gentlemen, and discussed if they would like to open a grocery shop. Two of them are showing interest but they seem to lack long-term interest, as they have returned from metro cities due to the lockdown and when the situation improves they are most likely to go back. My idea is to let someone who intends to stay in the village for a longer time begin this shop so that it won’t close too soon after it opens. Out of the five, two have been shortlisted and one will be given the opportunity to start a shop in the village, provided he or she can invest a little.

The awareness programme has been postponed until puja (Hindu worship holiday) vacation and will resume shortly after that. The children’s Transformational Community Development (TCD) programmes in Grassmere continue and around 11 children learnt about the ill-effects of mobile use, and how to stay safe at home last month. I am trying to enter the community through children's activities and if there is a positive response, I have a plan to start TCD there for adults as well.

Thank you,
