Hairdressing for a Future

Isiolo Empowerment Centre, Kenya

Safia is a 16-year-old girl who stopped going to school after 8th grade and was not doing anything after she completed her elementary education. Her mother is a housewife and her father works at construction sites whenever he is hired as a casual labourer.

Safia is outgoing and social in her character. Due to school fees she could not afford, she never proceeded to her secondary education and stayed at home helping her mum with the domestic chores. We encouraged her to continue with her studies and to learn some skills which could help her earn a living.

She joined our first batch of hairdressing classes. She showed interest in becoming a fashion hairdresser and she is now also ready to apply for the 10th-grade exam from open school. She learnt applying chemicals, putting hair into braids and other styles, and cutting various men’s hair without any problem.

Safia's parents are very happy and mentioned that she left school due to lack of school fees but now, since she is very clever and hardworking, we have encouraged her to continue her studies and apply for 10th-grade exam from day school.

Thank you!
