Happy Smiling Students

*WR Village, Sri Lanka

After the darkest days in Sri Lanka, the children and parents have overcome the fear that prevails in their village as there is tight security and the children can move freely to schools and come to the tutoring class.

We spoke to the children who told us that their parents do not stop them from coming to the tutoring class but encourage them to go.

We were happy to see that all the children had come to class with happy smiling faces. The teacher informed us now she is reviewing past papers to check the knowledge of the children. She then makes them answer the test paper prepared by her. She informed us that the children are knowledgeable and easily pick up the work. If they have a problem, they come up to her for help. We are happy with the progress of work.

Transformational Community Development (TCD) Update

Water -- Pure drinking water is available in the village, except for about six homes. This becomes a problem during the drought as wells dry up. Talking to the villagers, they say digging the well deeper will help them have water during the period of drought. We are now in the period of drought, and this is the worst drought faced in many years, where several wells have completely dried up.

Food -- There is food in the village and many families enjoy at least two meals a day. We will be teaching how to grow vegetables in home gardens through TCD lessons.

Income Generation -- We made them aware of the benefits of utilising micro loans. The villages are excited and are prepared to start income generation projects. We are looking for donors to fund the project.

Education -- Since we started the Tamil language classes, there are about 25 who come for the Tamil tutoring class. Many want to join the class but, at the moment, we are unable to accommodate all. The Education Committee is doing a good job going from home to home, informing the parents of the importance of education.

Wellness -- Wellness in the village needs improvement. Through TCD lessons, we will teach the villages to improve wellness in their homes.

Thank you,
