Helpless to Hopeful

Isiolo Empowerment Centre, Kenya

A woman named Eliza shared, “The fact that I was a single mother for so many years created a sense of helplessness in my life. GHNI has changed that sense of helplessness through the knowledge I gained from Isiolo Empowerment Centre. GHNI taught me that I am valuable and that I can contribute to the well-being of my own family. My growing financial freedom has even brought Juma around to becoming my husband.”

Eliza shared, “Great changes have happened! The fact that I’m now self-employed has made me independent. I don’t depend on my husband for financial support. I now earn enough money for my personal expenses.” Eliza feels proud to be able to help not only her own family with everyday expenses but also her community with affordable clothes made in her tailoring shop.

The Transformational Community Development (TCD) Empowerment Centre serves as a support system. It is a place where young people look forward to going every day and meeting with their peers and friends. The Centre offers apprenticeships to unemployed youth in their community and are donating free school uniforms to underprivileged children from their village, especially orphans.

Eliza shared, “I can now sustain myself. If my husband is not around or unable, I can contribute money for food purchases and school material for my children, which has meant a lot for my family.”

The community supports the Isiolo Empowerment Centre as they see young people becoming responsible and playing an important role in the progress of the community. The Empowerment Centre has boosted the confidence of people and is bringing in an element of sustainability.

Eliza said, “I have grown so much. Today I am in a position to pay the rent for my lodging, purchase materials, and improve my skills over time. I now have a greater self-esteem and confidence in myself with my new skills. I can contribute positively to my family and the community’s well-being.” Today, thinking of everything she has accomplished, Eliza looks back and wishes all unemployed youth could have the same opportunity as she did. She concluded, “When I was young, I never thought that I would come this far. Life was a struggle. I worked here and there, and I was never successful until now.”
