Human Trafficking Prevention Update - Fall 2018

Since the inception of our Criminal Law Policy & Training Center, our legal team has achieved some incredible milestones, including the following:
  • Advising the European Parliament on preventing and combating human trafficking and protecting victims.
  • Helping to shape human trafficking and child sex abuse legislation in the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Norway, Switzerland, South Africa, and European Parliament, whose laws have binding effects on 28 EU member countries.
  • Advising governments and legislators on how to disrupt human trafficking by creating/enforcing laws that increase the legal/financial penalties for traffickers, to put make trafficking unprofitable and put human traffickers out of business.
  • Training law enforcement and victim shelter owners to effectively interview human trafficking victims/witnesses/suspects/accomplices.
  • Training national leaders from five countries to eliminate corruption within their government.
  • Conducting mock sex crime trials with European criminal law students to demonstrate the complexity of evidence that is required to win a human trafficking prosecution.
  • Conducting human trafficking awareness/prevention seminars with high school, university and law school students in the United States, Switzerland and Czech Republic.
  • Conducting training events to educate government leaders from 15 countries where GHNI is presently working.

Our legal team’s strategy to eliminate human trafficking continues to include:
  • Reforming national legislation, policies and customary laws that strengthen the public justice system and increase convictions of human traffickers and perpetrators who commit sexual violence against children, while freeing the victims.
  • Providing training and support to government officials, law enforcement, prosecutors, judges and partner organizations to increase the convictions of human traffickers and perpetrators who commit sexual violence against children, while freeing the victims.
  • Providing consultation and training to civil society groups and private business sector to create citizen-based initiatives with local law enforcement to increase convictions of human traffickers and perpetrators who commit sexual violence against children, while freeing the victims.
  • Creating social awareness and advocating with national and international leaders to make ending human trafficking a top priority.

Why this strategy?

The number of human trafficking convictions is alarmingly low. Globally, 20.9 to 40+ million men/women/children are enslaved and trafficked for commercial purposes (IJM 2018). There were only 14,894 prosecutions and only 9,071 convictions globally for human trafficking in 2016 (2017 U.S. State Department Trafficking in Persons report).

What are you willing to risk to stop human trafficking?

As you know, our work is 100% privately funded by partners like you. Our talented legal team is ready, willing, and able to make the sacrifices that will be necessary to continue this life-changing work, but we still need to raise $7,000 to meet our $15,000 budget for the year, so we can continue delivering our life changing work in 2018 and into 2019.

I know many of you who will read this update will be moved by what’s happening to innocent men, women, and children and want to take action to eradicate human trafficking. Here is your chance to make a difference and partner with us.
