From Humble Beginnings to Family Prosperity

Nallathanniya Village, Sri Lanka

J. Veronika, resident of Nallathanniya Village, would like to share her story of hope with you:

“I am married, having one child. My husband is the breadwinner of the family. In the past, we faced serious difficulties from lack of work on the estate due to bad weather. It was my desire to run a market to support the family, and although there was a place available, I had no funds to start up the market.

“One of my friends was also in the same plight as me, however, she was doing well now. I asked her, ‘How did you managed to overcome these difficult times?’ She told me that GHNI had started a loan program with no interest. She also told me that the payback is monthly 10% of the loan taken, which suited me well.

“I was so badly in need of the money, that I immediately met with some committee members and handed over my loan application, which was approved. I received the loan in the month of February 2014. Since then, there is much improvement and most of the things that villagers need can be purchased in my small market.

“We are now in a position to keep the home fires burning, not having to think of tomorrow as we did in the past. No more arguments, we have new hope that more good things possible for me and my family through GHNI. We thank GHNI and its representatives for making the loan program a reality in Nallathanniya Village.”

Currently, we monitor the progress of the micro-financing project, visiting three homes monthly that have received loans. We actively help out the committee in the loans payback system and collection work. We are involved in how to pick out applications that are in need of loans. If there are exceptions, these are discussed with the committee.

In continuing to teach Transformational Community Development (TCD), we have now requested that the villagers come up with their requirements of TCD. This involves asking the committees for their input on what must be done on a priority basis in the village. Their response was the topic of water to Block No.3.

We are so happy for what these villagers are accomplishing!
