Income Generation Lessons for Sustainable Living

*RT Village, Nepal

This is me, Sreva, working as a Transformational Community Development (TCD) worker in Nepal. It is going on very effectively in our TCD locations, and there are many successful stories about the five key areas of TCD. Incomes have been raised and some villagers have started micro businesses using the seed money given from GHNI. Now they are self-sustainable in Income Generation and their children are going to school.

We have done many activities related to key TCD principles: Food, Education, Water, Wellness, and Income Generation. Now, they are trying to eat different types of food and getting fresh food for their family. But there are many obstacles because of poverty. So we have started an Income Generation programme, and have provided some seed money to start micro shops and keep animals, like goats, hens, buffaloes, etc. Education for all children is a priority, and we have encouraged parents to send their children to school. There is a lot of progress in using clean Water for drinking, cooking and washing. Now every family is using clean water.

This is a tough time in the world because of COVID-19, and we hope it will be controlled soon. Because of the virus, the entire country has been locked down, and the lives of people have been affected so badly. In our village, people are poor, they have to work daily for food, and if they don't get work then they don’t have food to eat. So I would like to encourage them to get involved in Income Generation and food production. If the whole family gets involved in it, then they can have food, education, and all that they need. And my plan is to start tailoring (sewing) training for the women of this community because if they have skill then they will be self-sustainable. If a minimum 10 to 15 women get the skill training it would be very good for their Income Generation.

TCD Update

  • Water - Villagers are using clean water for drinking, cooking, and washing regularly.
  • Food - People are growing their own kitchen gardens and eating more balanced diets.
  • Income Generation - Micro shops and animal keeping has started.
  • Education - Children are attending school for primary level education after our Education Awareness Programme.
  • Wellness - Cleanliness, using the toilet, and caring for one’s health are focuses.

Thank you!
