Hoogly Village, India

I would like to share the story of Raj, a 13-year-old boy who is learning about computers in our computer center. I had shared about him last year, so this time I have chosen to again because he is one of our best students. Raj knew nothing about computers when he joined, and because of that always scored poorly in the subject in school. But after he came to our center he learned fast and completed his basic computer course. Now he is pursuing an advanced course.

Per our plan of initiating second cropping in Dhoker Jhara Village, this month we encouraged villagers to initiate second cropping from now on. This way, their unused land can be used to generate crops to sell and for their own consumption, instead of leaving the land unused for several months.

In this quarter, I would like to share the change happening in people’s lifestyles. We have been working for a long time to make them aware of a healthy lifestyle. We were trying to do a second crop, but due to lack of confidence and lack of a permanent source of water, villagers refused to do so. Instead they are growing seasonal vegetables in their kitchen gardens. We are encouraging them to plant in large scale to get more profit.

This past quarter, we focused on encouraging villagers to find relief from traditions that hold them back and showed them a couple of examples that broke with tradition. We started teaching them how to break ground with a power tiller instead of using an ox. Also, we are teaching them treading using only the power tiller. It works fast and gives far better results than the traditional ways of doing all these things.
