Healthy Habits in Rainy Season

In this season, we discussed the importance of good health in the village of Dhoker Jhara. Due to the rain, the village roads were very badly affected. The small children play in muddy puddles causing various sicknesses, such as colds, coughing, measles, ear pain, etc. Parents don’t understand that precaution is better than cure when their children fall sick.

In recent days, we have been discussing the importance of education and are focusing on computer education. Villagers are excited to learn about computers and our women’s group is helping to tell villagers about computer education.

We have continued our weekly classes after the sowing season. Our focus is to impart basic health education so that they will be able to take care of themselves and learn health and hygiene. I have been teaching health lessons, especially about clean water and personal hygiene, for one year.

Planting Superior and Healthier Crops

Dhoker Jhara Village has been cultivating grain. Usually this cultivation is completed within four months. However, in upper areas, we have sown fast-growing grains and it is very good. These seeds only took three months to grow and are very useful for poor villagers, as they can use them for food and toward the next cultivation. This will improve the financial situation of the villagers.


New Crops & Preventing Disease

In Dhoker Jhara Village, vegetable farming was encouraged for the month of July. Vegetables like ladyfinger and gourd was planted. During monsoon season, villagers used to plant maize, but they were getting less production. This time, farmers created a vegetable plantation in a separate field to gain more profit. Some planted vegetables for their own family use and some to sell.

As peak season for paddy cultivation, July was a really busy month for the villagers of Kharibari Village. This is the one crop they cultivate every year due to the abundance of rain. Usually, preparation by ploughing the land begins in the month of June and planting of the paddy goes on till the end of July.


Open to New Techniques

In Jatapara Village, every July is the month people plant their crops. Also during this time, almost every village in Jharkhand farms their crops. In Jhopa Village, we completed our farming within just one month. Before, it usually took two months, but because of new technology and techniques, we did this work in very less time. When farmers used oxen or bull to plough fields, it took a lot of time and farmers grew tired very quickly.


Understanding Benefits of Toilet Rooms

Although we have been teaching health and hygiene lessons about using clean water and having a balanced diet, the one thing we always find difficult to help them understand is the importance of using the toilet. Therefore, this quarter, we focused on health awareness and especially about using the toilet rooms. We already have 30 toilet rooms in the village provided by the government three months ago.
