Kitchen Garden Research

Valley of Ali, Afghanistan

Yakawlang has cold weather, but some of our kitchen garden vegetables like radishes and lettuce are harvested twice a year without need of a greenhouse. The local people like to eat these two kinds of vegetables more than other vegetables.

The kitchen garden is not only for planting vegetables, but it is also used as a research farm for different kinds of fruits and vegetables. Going forward, we try to improve year after year. For example, this year we planted more vegetables than last year.  We had seed production from vegetables like black lettuce, radishes, and parsley. We also planted fruits and vegetables such as onion, garlic, cucumber, tomatoe, strawberry, zucchini, green pepper, carrot, and green bean.

Our plan for the next year is to expand the kitchen garden and promote the greenhouse to other villages. Still, there are people in remote villages who don’t know about these kinds of vegetables, so many families face malnutrition problems.

Thank you!
