Leading the Way

Gem Village, Kenya

The success of a community project is dependent upon various factors such as perception, willingness, understanding and sense of ownership. However, from our experience the overriding success factor is the willingness of the community to participate and take over sustainability responsibilities from project implementers. We have noted this does not come easily.

In spite of the need and desire of rural communities to improve their living conditions, in many cases the villagers we come across don’t share the same enthusiasm for projects. From our observations during coaching programmes with different community members, we find some of the reasons behind the lukewarm attitude.

In Gem Village the story is different due to their universally shared water problem and, because of this common challenge, they have all agreed to elect strong community leaders to represent them in the ministry of water office. Our staff member, Christopher, led the way for them in networking and, as a team, they requested the county office of Isiolo to give priority to their pressing need.

Thank you!
