Onions Generate Significant Revenue

Elala Village, Ethiopia

Elala Village is very suitable for onion production and the Transformational Community Development (TCD) Food Committee is expecting the new harvest to produce up to 80 quintals and make up to 70,000 birrs! They will collect the production in the next three weeks. Other villagers have also been learning from the TCD by watching and are now trying to make the same thing. All the villagers are pastoralists, but this different knowledge helps them source other income and food besides from their herds.

TCD Update

  • Water — The Water Committee still teaches the community how to filter unclean water for drinking. This will help the community to protect themselves from water-borne diseases.
  • Food — The Food Committee is also working hard to develop the irrigation in the village. Many of the villagers start irrigation after they see the effective results.
  • Income Generation — The Income Generation Committee engaged in different business activities. Their income is growing and TCD coaches are organising training about how to run small businesses.
  • Education — The number of school attendance dropped because of security issues, but now, due to the strong work of the Education Committee, the number of school attendance is increasing.
  • Wellness — The Wellness Committee is teaching the community how to protect every individual from the COVID-19 pandemic and uses masks during public gatherings.

Thank you!
