Progress in Ending Extreme Poverty

By, Bethany Marinelli

The year of 2015 will go into the books as one of great change and progress for Global Hope Network International. Our staff has worked hard, both in the field in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, and in our resource offices in France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

It’s difficult to truly quantify the hard work of Hidden and Hurting around the world who toiled toward a future of Hope. It is they whom we stand by in awe as they inspire us to push forward to end extreme poverty.

You, our donors, have worked equally as vigilantly to provide the funds and resources that allow this organization to exist.

Here is just a taste of what’s been accomplished over the past year.

Donors Who Demonstrated Compassion

It was you who saw the greatness in a Sri Lankan child’s shy gaze in a photograph. It was you who traveled to Jordan to meet the woman who began selling her drawings of her experiences as a refugee to help clothe her family. It was you who empathized with the story of a father laboring in a parched Ethiopian field to feed his children, hopeless it would amount to anything. It was you who gave what little you had left after paying your bills to bring relief to people facing a disaster. It was you who organized a fundraiser to adopt a village. It was you who volunteered your precious time to lessen the load in our resource offices. It was you who made it possible to send workers into the field, to teach the villagers, to bring the aid, to end the extreme poverty. THANK YOU!

Villagers Who Transformed their Villages

It’s been a record-breaking year for most new projects started. You’ve helped us to expand our work into places like Armenia, where refugees are returning home; Bangladesh, where people are vulnerable to slavery; Niger, where families are parched; and Pakistan, where parents are desperate to feed their hungry children. As communities see progress in neighboring villages, Transformational Community Development (TCD) has become a coveted opportunity. We’ve grown our reach in places like India, where tribal communities are motivated to overcome cyclical poverty; Myanmar, where the political climate is opening up opportunities that once seemed impossible; and Nepal, where the thought of preventing slavery inspires communities. These villagers are energized to dig wells, build schools, install latrines, and start new businesses that will provide life essential food, water, wellness, education, and income generation in their communities.

You’ve also brought help and hope to communities who are now ready to spread their wings of independence as new graduates of TCD. The residents of Tuka and Mudiyambo villages in Ethiopia have transformed from desperate cases of extreme poverty to thriving communities that are engaging in commerce through agriculture, animal husbandry, and entrepreneurship. Their children are succeeding in school and have nutritional food before them. Families are healthier and happier than ever before.

This progress will only multiply again in 2016 as hope continues to spread across the nations!

Victims Who Survived Disasters

Nepal was devastated by a series of major earthquakes, killing thousands and injuring many more this past spring. GHNI leaders in Nepal, while also affected, ran to the aid of their fellow countrymen. Because of your generous donations, those relationships continue today as relief is turning into development in villages outside of Katmandu, Nepal, where villagers were moved to turn their tragedy into an opportunity of change.

Myanmar was consumed by floods in late summer. Villagers’ water was contaminated, but you came through with donations for water filters. Additionally, the school collapsed in the torrent, but instead of losing hope, villagers were able to rebuild.

Then there’s the unending violence in the Middle East. The Yazidi people of Northern Iraq were terrified out of their homes. Syrian-Armenians escaped to their grandparents’ homeland. Syrians and Iraqis both fled for their lives to wherever and whoever would give them shelter. GHNI workers in Armenia, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Turkey are not only providing relief to these lost souls, but are helping them find dignity in a devastatingly undignified situation. Families are beginning to settle into their new homes, working for an honest living to feed and educate their children. They are finding hope through rehabilitation and development because people like you see the best in the least of these.

The Work is Not Done

Going into 2016, there are still children working on an empty stomach instead of going to school, people being lured into slavery, refugees without a place to lay their heads, and imminent natural disasters yet to unfold. Will you join us in ending this unnecessary suffering?

Today is the last day to make a tax-deductible donation for 2015. Your gift to end extreme poverty in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East is not just appreciated, it is needed!
