From Sadness to Strength

Children of Ezbit el Nakhl

Mahmoud is a 10-year-old boy who is abused by his father. Mahmoud’s father is married to his mother as well as two other women. Mahmoud has speech difficulties and has a hard time studying. He spends most of his time on the streets, which has made him aggressive and mean. Despite these challenges, Mahmoud has attended weekly classes and in recent weeks has made many positive changes. He is learning to express himself and is acting better. He still needs to improve, but we are hopeful he will become a better boy each day.

Women of Ezbit el Nakhl

This month we talked about the pain of loneliness and how it has affected each of us. Some women shared the pain of losing their husbands while others said they felt lonely since their children married and moved away. The tears in everyone’s eyes showed the depth of their pain.

A woman by the name of Fadia spoke of the loneliness and sorrow in not having her own children. I talked with her and tried to encourage her to focus on her blessings. After our talk, she said that she had been feeling isolated from others and felt as though people avoided her. She came to realize that she was the one who had not been reaching out to others, visiting with them and asking about their lives. She decided that day that she would begin to take the initiative to call her friends and ask about them. I was happy to hear Fadia speak these words but was even happier the following week when I saw her. She came to our group wearing bright clothes and a big smile. The sadness and loneliness that had been controlling her was gone.
