School Holiday in Sri Lanka

*U Village, Sri Lanka

When we arrived at the tutoring class, the children had happy and smiling faces, but we were not sure as to the reason. We asked the youngest of them what was the reason for your smiling faces. She said it was the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on the 13th and 14th of April. Today, the tutoring class would close for the month of April and reopen in May.

We asked the children what they would do during the holidays. They said that they would follow religious observances and visited their relatives in other villages to wish them well in the new year. I asked them if they would forget their studies. All answered, “No, we have been given homework which we have to do during the holidays.”

The teachers informed us that the children’s progress in study was good, as the children worked hard to get good positions in school.

Before we closed for holidays, the usual traditional greetings were done by the children towards the elders. We were also greeted traditionally by the parents. The children wanted their picture to be taken.
