Second Cropping Catches On

Dhoker Jhara Village, India

It has been a few years since our ongoing Transformational Community Development (TCD) work started in the Dhoker Jhara Village. Month by month, villagers are witnessing small changes, which is leading them towards holistic transformation. Last quarter, villagers also witnessed an unusual thing as they saw us harvesting our second crop. In the last quarter, we had targeted to do a second cropping in the village, but very few were interested. Then, along with some villagers who risked their capital, we started a second cropping with the wheat paddy. Last month was harvesting time. Seeing our success, most of the villagers are very excited and willing to do second cropping next year.

Two farmers, Kulu and Luthran, are very excited seeing their harvest. As I had mentioned before, villagers used to harvest once a year, and the rest of the time, they either worked as laborers or did nothing. My goal was to teach them the proper use of their time. Now these two farmers have surprised me as they have started planting vegetables on their farm instead of sitting at home after the harvest. I’m happy to see the changes happening slowly in villagers’ lives in Dhoker Jhara.
