Small Shop Making a Big Difference

*RT Village, Nepal

Devna lives in RT village. She and her husband live with their two children. Her life was full of struggle and sorrows because of poverty. She and her husband worked very hard, but they were still facing financial, food, clothing and other problems. At times, they would only eat once a day, at other times, they wouldn’t eat at all. Their children used to cry because of hunger, and it was a really difficult life for them.

As they have no land, they used to collect firewood and sell it to the nearby hotel market for income. But it was very difficult work to bring wood from the jungle, because it is very far from the village, and sometimes their lives were in danger from wild animals.

But now, with help from GHNI and Transformational Community Development (TCD), their situation has improved in many ways. When I shared our TCD vision and its movement to this family, they became very excited and got ready to do work with GHNI according to TCD norms and values. We started by providing them with seeds and teaching them about our seed project. When they got the seeds, they started one small shop which is called “Chatpate Shop”, nearby their home and close to the school. People come in throughout the day and buy snacks and other things from Devna’s shop. When I visited her and her family, I saw good things happening in their lives. Whereas, they had very little income before, she told me she can earn around 600 - 700 rupees per day from this shop. They now have good food to eat, clean water to use, good clothes, and their children are ready to go to school.

Thank you!
