Tackling a Health Crisis with Ingenuity

Polewali, Indonesia

Dewi* is 31 years old, unmarried, and living with her parents in Polewali Village. She and her family pool their resources to buy essentials just to get by. Dewi works as a teacher’s assistant at a middle school in a neighbouring village, but the pay is unstable and insufficient. In order to add income, she learnt to sew and takes orders from her house.

When our Transformational Community Development (TCD) training team was discussing with the village committee about needs and solutions that could be initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee raised the issue that face masks for disease prevention were difficult to obtain.  A plan then developed to work together to mitigate this problem.

The GHNI training team secured fabric from the nearest city, and the committee brought the fabric to Dewi in order to begin producing their own face masks. She quickly gathered her friends and they got to work. Masks are now readily available in Polewali Village at around half of the normal price, while Dewi and her neighbours are still able to add to their income from this venture. An urgent need in the village has been met thanks to the initiative of Dewi and the TCD village committee, making the most of these difficult times.
