A Widow's Hope

Didi Hara Village, Ethiopia

A widow living in Didi Hara Village, Dire is a 26-year-old mother of two children. Her husband died three years ago in a tribal clash some distance from their village. Afterwards, life was very hard and raising her children was a great challenge for her.

One day, when life was desperate, Dire decided to leave her children with her mother and migrate from her area to another, looking work. Before she left, the elders of the community proposed to the local Transformational Community Development (TCD) worker that she become a member of the Agriculture Group. Now, after two consecutive harvests, Dire has earned 18,670 birr (nearly $670). This has changed her life miraculously, and she now raises her children without want.
