Women to Run Shrimp Farming Cooperative

Tanakeke-Batu Ampara Village, Indonesia

After three years of working with the community towards sustainable development in Batu Ampara Village, we are beginning to see the results of their hard work. One of the income generation projects has been Vanammei shrimp farming and cultivation, in which a couple of farmers have already had successful harvests.

In the future, the project will be managed by a “koperasi” (cooperative) run by the community. GHNI is currently involved in assisting with the koperasi’s establishment. Later, the community will be fully in charge of running it. Moreover, GHNI’s shrimp expert identified women volunteers from the community to hold responsibility as the core committee. They will also determine who will be the chairperson.

Before establishing the koperasi and its activities, women in the community were only occupied with working in the kitchen and child rearing, as explained by Mrs. Haji Kanang, one of the women in the village. Now, as they are trusted to run and take care of the koperasi, their lives are changing. The women are beginning to feel increasingly confident, respected, and have equal rights with men to run the koperasi.

Thank you for partnering with us to help build confidence in the women of Batu Ampara!
