Working Together to Uplift the Community

DG Village*, Nepal

We have continued our Transformational Community Development (TCD) activities in the community throughout the COVID-19 crisis. We are continuing to do the following:

  • Visiting villagers in their homes
  • Teaching lessons about COVID-19
  • Discussing personal hygiene as well as the importance of safe drinking water and cleaning hands
  • Helping villagers understand how to solve problems in their own community

Basically, we have formed three committees made up of volunteers. The committees are focussed on education, sanitation, and income generation. The volunteers are actively working hard to help the community. They help teach small groups all about our TCD principles. The volunteers have a big role in positively transforming the community. They are also interested in learning more new things, and they have said that TCD class has brought transformation in their life and changed the community, so they are very thankful to GHNI.

Older citizens are afraid of COVID-19, as they have been watching the news that many old citizens have lost their lives. We know that seniors are the most at-risk age group. We also know that some symptoms of this virus include a cough, headache, and fever. Because of their fear, they have avoided going to the doctor, but with the help of our TCD education, we have taught them that it is best if they visit the doctor if they are ill.

Finally, there are still food challenges because of the current lockdown in the area, something that they are looking for help with.

Success Story from Sreva**

Sreva has a small, poor family in Nepal. She has two sons. Her husband goes to work to earn money for them to live. When we started TCD class in DG Village, their family rejected the opportunity at that moment, saying that they did not need this class to make their lives better. However, when Sreva saw the positive changes TCD helped create in the community, she wanted to get involved. After one year, she came to us asking to join our TCD class. It has been four years since she joined and life has indeed improved. She obtained enough seed money to buy two baby goats. That helped her earn some income, and eventually, after selling the goats, she bought cows and earned money by selling milk. In this way their family has helped pay for their children to go to school. She is very happy now. She was grateful and promoted TCD as a real benefit for communities.

Thank you!
