Small-Scale Crop Farming Can Be Life Changing

February 3, 2023

Kenyan villagers checking the vegetable fields.

The northern part of Kenya has been adversely affected by a prolonged period of drought since April, due to the failure of both long and short rains this year. Isiolo County hasn’t been shielded from this. In Kiwanjani Village, many families have been heavily affected, and getting food on their tables has been a nightmare. Many school children suffered, with some becoming malnourished. The community had no knowledge of alternative farming, and it was in this area that GHNI came in as a partner and introduced Transformational Community Development (TCD). They provided training on alternative farming and the sensitive issue of malnutrition.

GHNI spoke to the neighboring Tulili Primary School, which had access to pure underground water through a borehole, and asked them to assist their neighbors by providing water and land for farming. They agreed to do so. After taking them through training on alternative farming and ways to get water, the villagers of Kiwanjani were able to plow fields for different crops on a small scale. They planted kale, onions, spinach, maize, and beans. Many families have been encouraged and helped as a result of this, with food and money provided for their children. They were so grateful for the life-changing experience and skills they have gained through the TCD training.

Thank you!
