Kitchen Gardens Improve, Drought Persists

Dhoker Jhara Village, India

This month, I reminded people about health and hygiene. Some families like to buy vegetables from the market rather than grow them on their own. I spoke with two such families about the difference between conventionally farmed vegetables they eat versus organic ones. They were sufficiently motivated to now grow organic vegetables in their own kitchen gardens!

Mushroom Training is Full of Promise

Kharibari Village, India

We presented training on mushroom farming as part of our Income Generation Programme last month in the Damdim Cluster. The programme was attended by approximately 15 community leaders and their associates. We ran a follow up meeting in October to provide additional information about the needs of mushrooms once they start to grow. This was a new experience for most community leaders as they had never had such training before.

Potato Program a Boon for Village

Jatapara Village, India

Twenty years ago, people used to grow vegetables on their own for family consumption, but the current generation hardly seems to do this anymore. This year, we decided to cultivate potatoes on a large scale. People were not prepared to do this, but we spoke with them and convinced them that if we grow potatoes together, then together we can succeed.

Localising Income Opportunties

Kharibari Village, India

In Khairbari Paschim Dhura Village, there is not a single grocery shop, and people have to go 1 km away to get even a minor thing like a match box. For a long time, I have longed to see a shop in the village itself run by the local Khairbari people, but they were very skeptical to start one. I was constantly pursuing the women of Khairbari to start a shop, but they wouldn’t listen.

Expanding to Full Grocery Shop

Kharibari Village, India

Last month, I met two members of Grassmore Tea Estate Co-operative Society and told them about Transformational Community Development (TCD). This tea garden is going through a transition phase and is often forced to close due to non payment of wages. They are interested and want to start TCD in the tea garden.
